As an avid Manchester United fan, I think it would be really easy to think that that the championship has been wrapped up this season. Five points clear with seven games to go, coupled with a easier run-in than Manchester City, places United as favourites as we enter the final hurdle.
I’ve also watched football long enough, however, to understand that football throws up surprises from time to time, and make no mistake, City are still in the race this season.
There is certainly a general consensus that if United win the Premier League this season, then it will be Sir Alex Ferguson’s greatest achievement, and I am an advocate of that, but not for the reasons that have been argued.
This United team has been called ‘the worse side under Fergie’, when in truth, although lacking in big names, it is one of the most well rounded units I have seen. There is also the issue of injuries which must be raised, Nemanja Vidic’s absence, along with a vast array of talent missing in midfield, but still Ferguson has kept the ball rolling.
Their Champions League and cup form has certainly not been good enough, something I have no problem admitting, but it would take a brave man to criticise their league form with all the hurdles the club has faced.
There is no doubt that United are a club in transition, with the likes of Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Danny Welbeck and Rafael coming of age this season, but a transitional period need not be an unsuccessful one, just as the wiley old fox is proving
